Sewing for Friends Part 1: Sew Over It Ultimate Wrap Dress

My lovely friend is having a baby later this year and she was having trouble finding maternity dresses that she liked, so I put my hand up to make her a dress one night after a couple of wines and was feeling quite generous. She’s not a huge print fabric fan so this knit fabric was a great pick by her as it’s not too out there.

We both thought that the Sew Over It Ultimate Wrap Dress was the best for her increasing baby bump.

The Bondi Top - Simple and a little bit special all at the same time!

This top is awesome and packed full of details that make it just that little bit more special. Back yoke, back pleat and curved hem which is slightly longer at the back. The pattern calls for voiles, lawn, rayon or any other lightweight fabrics and is a great way to show off some print on print action if your game but would look equally as good in a colour block version.

Is there fabric shopping in Langkawi? Of course there is!

I was lucky enough to have our first kid free trip to Langkawi, Malaysia. As soon as we booked our flights and accommodation I was keen to start researching whether or not there was a decent Batik Fabric store in Langkawi and there is! Atma Alam Batik Art Village!

This place is beautiful. Unfortunately they do not permit photography inside the art village so I couldn’t get any photo’s. I have though included in this post some photo's of our trip away. This island is so beautiful and I can see how your surroundings could be an inspriation to create such wonderful batik fabrics.

Sewing & Bizarre Dreams = Awesome Kids Culottes

Pattern: Megan Nielsen Patterns – MN4203//Mini Tania Culottes

Fabric: 100% Premium Cotton Voile. Art Gallery Fabrics, Mojave Illuminated by Leah Duncan (Tule Collection)

The first night I start this trace out the pattern. My little one is only 2 and a half and the pattern goes up to 12 years, so I think I’ll be using this one more than once! So I trace out the pattern and lay down the fabric and pin the pattern pieces to it. I’m knackered so I go to bed. I have the weirdest dreams all night that I take the pattern pieces off and my beautiful soft voile has turned into the same hand feel as the tracing paper pattern pieces. I keep picking them up and scrunching them and they keep making rustling paper noises...it’s very weird... Anyway...I’m weird...the next morning I run down stairs and check that everything is as I left it before my bizarre dreams....it is...of course, so I proceed to cut out the pattern pieces. I luckily have half a day off the kids so I start sewing.

Sew Over It and the Prettiest Fabric in the Land

The Sew Over It – Ultimate Shift Dress is awesome. For starters it has so many variations you will never get bored of this pattern. You are literally spoilt for choice. To start, it gives you plenty of sleeve options. These include a set in sleeve (short, three quarter or full length), a sleeve frill or just sleeveless. It also gives you the option of adding a neck frill which looks really cute. The pattern also provides the option to make it into a top and a tunic. The size range is 8 – 20.  I totally recommend this pattern to a beginner seamstress. It has a lot of good sewing fundamentals like bust darts and neck facing which once mastered will help you to progress to intermediate patterns.

The only way I know how to start is WOW, WOW, WOW! Oh Happy Day!

I have just realised I never have to leave the house again to buy my daughter leggings ....well as long as I have a little elastic and some stretchy fabric in my stash....

This pattern is awesome, easy to follow and super simple so if you are a beginner seamstress with an adorable little person snotting on your knees then this is a great place to start.

Pattern: Megan Nielsen Patterns – MN2303//Briar

Fabric: Knit  95% Cotton, 5% Spandex. Art Gallery Fabrics, Painting Morale by April Rhodes (Bound Collection)

After over a year of no sewing (except for the occasional bib as a present) I decided to try out my products (the perfect excuse to get back onto the sewing horse). The aim is to choose a pattern and fabric from the website each month and write a little blog about my experience.  These stories are no way a reflection on the patterns or the fabric but just what happened to me when I try to sew....

I decided to try out the Megan Nielsen Briar Tee pattern version 3 (short sleeve & full length). This pattern calls for all fabrics stretchy so I chose the beautiful and soft Art Gallery Fabrics Knit – Painting Morale.

So the first silly thing I did was thought I remembered how to sew....I’d say back in the day I used to be expert...now...definitely beginner so I was glad I chose this pattern.

Secondly I started sewing this pattern at 9.30pm after a glass of wine....hmmm....
